A Canadian drugmaker is warning doctors not to prescribe Viagra to men for a long-term health issue, even though it has not yet taken a step to curb the erection-impotence disorder, known as impotence.
In a statement Tuesday, the drug maker, a pharmaceutical firm, said the warning is part of the company's effort to prevent the sale of Viagra.
The warning comes after a study published by the drugmaker found that men who took Viagra experienced a 10 percent increase in the risk of erectile dysfunction compared to men who did not take the drug.
The study was done by the Canadian Medical Association and published last year, and the warning is part of a larger study on the subject.
The Canadian study, a government advisory panel of health care professionals and researchers from the University of Toronto and researchers from the University of Ottawa, found that Viagra users were five to 15 times more likely to develop impotence compared to patients who took a placebo.
"The evidence shows that Viagra and similar prescription medications, including Viagra and sildenafil citrate, are effective at treating erectile dysfunction and can reduce the likelihood of further complications or side effects," the panel said.
Viagra, manufactured by Pfizer Inc., is approved in Canada and the U. S. in most countries. It is not available in the U.
